How to Memorise Formulas So They Stay Memorised

Formulas are not memorised by staring at them. They are memorised by being used, spaced and connected.

Understand before you store

A formula you understand is ten times easier to keep. Before memorising, ask: what is each symbol? Why does it sit where it sits? Even a rough intuition — "area grows with the square because both sides grow" — gives memory a hook that raw symbols never provide. If a formula's origin is a mystery, ask 7Solve to derive it once in simple steps.

The one-page chapter sheet

One page per chapter: every formula, plus a two-line worked example each. Writing the sheet by hand is itself a memory event, and in revision week these pages replace the entire textbook.

Use, don't recite

Tricks for the stubborn ones

  • Mnemonics: silly sentences stick — the sillier, the better.
  • Derive-once rule: if you can derive it in 20 seconds (like most trigonometric identities), store the derivation, not the result.
  • Pair confusables: permutation vs combination, simple vs compound interest — learn confusing formulas side by side with one contrasting example each.

The night-before protocol

Read each sheet, cover it, rewrite it from memory, check. Whatever you missed, rewrite twice. Then sleep — sleep is when the sheets become permanent.
