The US CMA is one of the fastest routes to a global finance credential — two papers, 6–12 months, worldwide recognition.
What the US CMA is
The Certified Management Accountant, awarded by the IMA (USA), focuses on management accounting and financial management — costing, budgeting, performance management, decision analysis, corporate finance. It pairs naturally with B.Com/M.Com and is widely recognised by multinationals in India and the Gulf.
The two parts
- Part 1 — Financial Planning, Performance and Analytics: external reporting, planning and budgeting, performance management, cost management, internal controls, technology and analytics.
- Part 2 — Strategic Financial Management: financial statement analysis, corporate finance, decision analysis, risk management, investment decisions, professional ethics.
Each exam: 100 MCQs + two essay scenarios, passing score 360/500. You can attempt the parts in any order.
Eligibility and rough cost
A bachelor's degree (any stream) plus two years of relevant experience — the experience can be completed within seven years after passing. All-in cost from India is typically ₹80,000–₹1,20,000 including IMA membership, entrance fee, exam fees and study materials — student discounts cut this significantly.
A working study plan
- 4–5 months per part at 10–12 hours a week fits alongside a job or degree.
- MCQ volume decides the result — aim at 3,000+ practised questions per part.
- Drill topic-wise before mixing: generate fresh US CMA section-wise practice on 7Marks, and put any solution you cannot follow through 7Solve for a step-by-step walkthrough.
- Essays reward structure: state the principle, apply it to the numbers, conclude.
