How to Make Your Own Backing Track for Free

A backing track is an instrumental version of a song used for live performance, practice, or recording. Making one used to require expensive studio software. Now you can do it in your browser for free.

What Is a Backing Track?

A backing track is the full arrangement of a song minus the lead vocal. It's used by:

  • Solo singers performing live without a full band
  • Musicians practising a specific instrument part
  • Vocalists recording demo tracks at home
  • Music teachers creating lesson materials
  • Tribute bands and cover artists

Method 1: Vocal Removal (Fastest)

The quickest way to get a backing track from any song:

  1. Have the song as an audio file (MP3, WAV, FLAC)
  2. Go to 7by.in/tools/vocal-remover
  3. Drop the file in and click "Remove Vocals"
  4. Download the Instrumental output

Total time: under 60 seconds. The result is the original backing track — real instruments, real production, exactly as it sounded on the record (minus the centred vocal).

Method 2: Stem Splitting (More Control)

If you want to customise the backing track — for example, removing the drums as well, or getting just the rhythm section — use the Stem Splitter:

  4. Recombine only the stems you want in any audio editor
